creating opportunities

I wanted to talk a bit today on the idea of creating your own opportunities. As an actor 99.9% of the time you hear the word “no.” So the idea of rejection is something I am incredibly familiar with. Don't get me wrong it took me a long time to come to grips with what that means and how it has absolutely no reflection on my self or my talents. But that is a different conversation. Today I want to talk about what happens when you get that “no.” So when I hear the word no, I try and look at it as an opportunity to do something else. Maybe create my own show, do a cabaret, learn a new skill, whatever it may be, I try to think of that no as a positive, because if I do not it is extremely bad for my mental health.

Now if we look at this idea in the world of podcasting I am constantly creating opportunities for us. Because a big life lesson is to understand that NOTHING is handed to you, and that if you want something you have to ask for it. Now of course there is fear of what the answer will be from the other person but really the worst answer you can get is no. I am sending out about 10-15 emails a day to new non-profits, guests, newspapers or news stations, markets, basically throwing spaghetti at a wall and hoping something sticks. Recently I reached out to a few news stations and heard crickets from most, one woman even blocked me, I’m not sure why, but apparently I offended her with my friendly email. A few days after I got an email about how NBC’s 6 in the Mix would love to have us on. I will put the link at the end so you can watch the 2 minute segment we did the other day.

Without me reaching out, I do not think we would have gotten that opportunity to be on such a prestigious network that broadcasts to so many people.

The truth is both in acting, and podcasting exposure is so important, because you just never know when something is going to strike someone watching and that is the thing that catapults you forward.

So, why am I talking about this? I think we forget the amount of power we have in dictating our own lives. But we create the opportunities for ourselves because like I said no one else will, it is entirely up to us. So go out and create those opportunities, remember that you miss 100% of the shots you do not take, no one can read your mind, and the worst answer you will get is no, and that is okay, at least you tried, and now you move on to the next opportunity.

I guess I am writing this for you and for me, because there are times when I just want to give up, but than an amazing opportunity is presented and it brings to light all the hard work you put in to get there. So just like I am proud of myself, I am proud of all of you for creating opportunities for yourself.

Love always your Cycle Half,

Emily
