Dedication Over Motivation

I have to be honest and say my inspiration for writing this Blog Post was from our last guest, Courtney Roselle, and if you have not listened to her episode yet I strongly suggest you stop reading this and go listen. In her episode, Courtney spoke about how motivation only gets her so far and after the motivation wears off it takes dedication.

I resonate with that sentiment so strongly because I feel like I live and breathe it every day.

I think when you first get motivated to start a new project, go to the gym, or start a new relationship there is the shiny new object effect that takes place, and after a while, the shine wears off. So what happens when that shine wears off? Most people give up, stop going to the gym, or give up this new “love”. I have been there so many times and given up on so many passions because it became too difficult for me. One of the things that I have a bad cycle with is working out. I every so often get motivated to start my fitness journey again, and then after a while, I end up not being motivated to work out anymore. I will say for myself my schedule constantly changes and I am a person who likes organization so I am hoping that with my adjuncting on a full-time basis I can get motivated to start my journey with the gym again, and maybe this time be dedicated enough to continue.

And while I may not be dedicated enough to go to the gym, there is one passion where the dedication keeps me going, and that is Cycle Chats. We are almost at our two-year anniversary and I can honestly say I am not giving up anytime soon. I’m sure most people in my situation would look at our numbers and say that we are crazy to keep going, but I honestly don’t care. I have never been more dedicated to a passion project because I know what we are providing is necessary, I know that what we are doing is going to change lives, and I know one-day Cycle Chats will grow and flourish, I see it, and I believe it will happen. I am so dedicated to Cycle Chats that it’s sometimes all I can think about, I have so many ideas that I have pages of notes, and lengthy text messages to Stephanie to prove it. I am so in love with what we are doing, and I am never going to stop. My journey with Cycle Chats has been the most rewarding journey I have taken in my entire life. Because of her, I am a different person, and I am forever changed by the women I have had the honor of getting to interview.

So, let me end this blog post with this. If there is something you want to do, do it, don’t wait another day. But realize that motivation is only half the battle, dedication is what is going to get you to the finish line.

Love always your Cycle Half,

Emily
